Everton 3-6 Chelsea

Everton 3-6 Chelsea

(Mirallas 45, Naismith 69, Eto'o 76: Costa 1, 90, Ivanovic 3, Coleman OG 67, Matic 74, Ramires 77)

39,402

What the hell can you do? How there are still people even after this debacle who are insistent on there being nothing wrong with Jagielka and Distin, I can only assume they are blind, or think we're playing basketball, because if the first two games werent bad enough, this is the worst defensive performance Ive ever seen from an Everton side. Summed up inside 35 seconds when Jagielka, in the middle of tracking Costa's run, just decided to try and play him offside...after the pass had been made, leaving him with an easy one on one. Next up, the first of many horrific decisions from the officials that ironically prompted Graham Poll today to call this the worst officiated game he's ever seen...he'd know of course. As just 2 minutes later, Ivanovic was left unmarked, but offside, but nothing given by Stevie Wonder running the line. He only enhanced his claim for being registered blind when he somehow missed Howard inexplicably handle the ball outside the box under pressure from Hazard as well, and the first time he did award an offside in the game (prompting the most sarcastic celebration of a decision by a crowd I think Ive ever heard!) it was wrong! Jagielka making a complete balls of playing Costa offside again as he rushed through and hit the post, but the flag had already gone up anyway. Typically, at the other end, we got the linesman who actually knew what offside was and disallowed a goal from us, Lukaku heading a corner against the bar, and Distin poking in the rebound from an offside position. Mirallas did though give us hope after a first half where we'd never looked out of it, with a lovely long distance header from Coleman's cross.

Defensively, the second half made those first 3 minutes look like a defensive instructional video. Howard made two early saves from Costa, but for the most part, it was us doing the pushing for an equaliser. And you could tell it was starting to get a bit fractious, Fabregas doing his usual and getting involved with everything and having a whinge and a niggle, and Costa getting booked for getting involved with Coleman. Just when we were looking like the only side who was going to score next, we totally undid all our good work. Hazard ran into the box under pressure from McCarthy, with the rest of the defence all just stood around in the middle of the box marking nobody and just watching him, then just our luck, Coleman blocks his cross, and it deflecting in. Costa showing his class goading Coleman, fair play to Howard who ran over and let him know about it, while our captain stood around feeling sorry for himself. We were straight back in it though, McGeady feeding the outstanding Steven Naismith who finished confidently with the outside of his right foot. We were that good and that creative going forward, there was still never a feeling we were out of it. But then that defence just kept on undoing everything we did going forward. Just 5 minutes later again, everybody just backed off and backed off Matic, allowing him to shoot, only then did anyone attempt a block, and again the deflection beat the keeper. Straight from the kick off again, we hit back immediately, debutant Samuel Eto'o with a lovely stooping header from a free kick. Only for us to again make fools ourselves with our version of marking, again backing off all the way and leaving Ramires unmarked until far too late. We nearly hit back immediately again with what would have been our goal of the season no question, a brilliant passing move saw Mirallas with an audacious improvised attempt that Courtois tipped onto the post. But no, we let the final word and the final embarassment go to the stars of the show, the Everton defence. Besic came on for his debut and got in on the act with his first touch, an obscene backheel to fucking nobody but John Obi Mikel. He played a much more sensible backheel to Costa, leaving Jagielka diving in and sprawling like a schoolboy, Costa doing the same to Distin before tucking it into the corner.

So one goal that shouldnt have stood, two deflections, and a gift, Costa and Howard should have been sent off. Thank God we can score goals. Naismith, Mirallas, Lukaku, Eto'o, McGeady, Coleman, all excellent. Naismith is on fire at the moment. He'll get injured on international duty knowing our luck. That defence though...its a season too much for Jagielka and Distin. For all those defending them saying they havent become bad overnight, its not overnight. Our defence was excellent last season, so lets not forget that a huge part of that was Jagielka getting injured and John Stones playing half a season, and now he's picking splinters out of his arse. He needs to be in the lineup right now, and get another defender in before the deadline, because they are undermining all the good stuff at the moment.

Everton Man of the Match

Steven Naismith. He's a pest when we're defending, and pure class when he gets in the box. In the form of his life.

Everton vs Chelsea

Premier League

Goodison Park

Saturday August 30th 5.30pm

Another tough game before the international break, one of the favourites for the title and they've justified it so far with 2 wins from 2. After going over a decade without a win against the Blues though, we have a pretty good record against them since breaking that duck. This game could be particularly interesting too with us lining up with two ex-Chelsea strikers up front...

Team News

Samuel Eto'o should be involved, but whether he starts or not will depend on him proving his fitness this week. Lukaku should be fit after a knock last week, but Steven Pienaar is definitely out.
Diego Costa is Chelsea's big doubt with a hamstring injury, Didier Drogba will likely take his place if he doesnt make it, since Fernando Torres has just confirmed a move to Milan. Andre Schurrle is fit again.

Ones to Watch

Thibaut Courtois. Young keeper who has taken over from Petr Cech this season after two very successful years on loan at Atletico Madrid.
Branislav Ivanovic. Anything dislikeable about Chelsea can be summed up by him. One of the dirtiest players around, but also one of the biggest girls if anyone so much as breathes on him. Horrible knack of scoring goals from defence too, and with our defence so far this season...
Cesc Fabregas. Another horrible get, but a damn talented one. Back in England after a few years back at Barcelona, always loved a goal at Goodison, and the current star of my Fantasy Team so you know where to put your money!
Diego Costa. Another in a long line of expensive big name strikers at Chelsea. Whether he'll go the same way as Torres and Shevchenko, it's too early to say. Made an excellent start with 2 goals in 2.
Didier Drogba. Just when you thought we'd seen the back of the bogeyman for good, he bloody comes back! One of the best players ever to play in the Premier League, Chelsea's talisman in his first spell and has won pretty much everything. If Costa is indeed injured, not a abd man to have in reserve!

Last Time

Everton 1-0 Chelsea (Naismith 45) Premier League, September 14th 2013

Just under a year ago, Roberto Martinez got his first League win as Everton manager, against this very same opposition! Samuel Eto'o ironically played a big part in the first half, Gareth Barry on his debut making a goal saving clearance while Eto'o had the goal at his mercy. After withstanding a lot of Chelsea pressure, Steven Naismith gave us the lead on the stroke of half time, nodding in after Jelavic flicked a deep cross back across goal. Chelsea pushed and pushed second half, but we held on for a huge win.

Memorable Meeting

Everton 2-1 Chelsea (Saha 33, 75: Malouda 17) Premier League, February 10th 2010

After over 10 years without a win in any competition against Chelsea, this one couldnt have been more surprising. Chelsea started on fire and deservedly took the lead through Malouda after just 17 minutes , and it looked like one of those games where you wondered how many they were going to get. Suddenly Saha headed in a Donovan corner, and the game transformed completely. Now we were on fire, and should have led at half time, but Petr Cech saved Saha's weak penalty. He had his moment though, John Terry misjudging a high ball forward from Distin, allowing Saha to chest the ball down and crack in an unstoppable volley from the edge of the box. Angry manic Goodison under the headlights at its best. And we've done pretty well against them since ironically!

Prediction

Another tough game, a draw wouldnt be a bad result really. Though if we go in front, it would be nice to hold on to it this time! Everton 1-1 Chelsea

Europa League Group Stage Draw

Given some of the horror trips that were in that draw, thinks havent gone badly for us at all! The trip to Kuban Krasnodar, a 20 hour drive from Moscow, has spoiled it slightly, but it is more than made up for with trips to Germany and France to play Wolfsburg and Lille. Fixtures will be released within the next hour.

League Cup 3rd Round draw

Swansea away...worst...draw...ever! An away tie at a busy and expensive period of the season when we really could have done with a cheap home tie, away to another Prem side, so no excitement or intrigue whatsoever...and and its bloody miles away! We have a great record against Swansea, which is about the best thing I can say about it. Let's hope the Europa League draw on Friday is a bit more exciting...

Transfers

Samuel Eto'o

Chelsea to Everton

Free Transfer

Last August, our second choice striker was Victor Anichebe. This August, it's Samuel Eto'o...What the fuck happened? Okay he's nowhere near the player he was as he's 33 now, but for a backup striker with huge experience in Europe and of actually winning things, could we have got any better? Only concern is his wages, hopefully we're not throwing around silly money, because in every other respect, it's a good signing. And he gets to make his debut against his former club...throw in Lukaku facing Chelsea too, and Saturday just got a lot more interesting than it already was!

Saturday 23 August 2014

Everton 2-2 Arsenal

Everton 2-2 Arsenal

(Coleman 19, Naismith 45: Ramsey 83, Giroud 90)

39,490

What in the hell are we playing at? Seven minutes left in our first two games, we're 2-1 and 2-0 up. dominated possession, spent the majority of both games looking pretty damn comfortable. And come away with 2 points instead of 6. What. The actual. Fuck.

There are three glaring concerns here. The first is up front. We are so painfully reliant on Lukaku, even when he doesnt look like he's doing a lot, he is vital to our whole system and making our midfield work. We couldnt take him off when he'd run into the ground last week, and we fell apart when he went off with an injury today. The ball never stayed in Arsenal's half once after he went off, we had absolutely nothing up there to hold that ball up and relieve the pressure. We need another striker before the window shuts. Not because Lukaku is a problem, but we saw the worst of him last season when he took a few knocks and needed a break out of the side, something we couldnt give him until he actually got injured at Liverpool. He struggled from playing every single game. We've played only two games and this is already a huge problem that has played a big part in dropping 4 points. God help us when the Europa League starts next month...

Second is our central defenders, what the hell are they doing? Its as if they've never met each other before, or even played football. I can understand defenders making mistakes, or being done up by a bit of skill from an attacker. But these are basic schoolboy bullshit errors. Last week Distin dissolved into Bambi on ice and let himself get bullied all over the place by a fella who physically cant touch him, while Jagielka couldnt win a header. This week, the pair of them stood still and watched Aaron Ramsey tap one in, and for the second, Jagielka let a cross go way over his head, and Distin was utterly bullied again by Giroud who scored with pretty much a standing header. Absolutely fucking unforgiveable crap. The pair of them need their heads banging together because they've played like fucking amateurs these first two games and cost us 3 out of 4 goals we've conceded.

The third is far more worrying as a whole. Our lack of fitness is alarming. Two games, up until about 70-75 minutes, we've not just dominated, but we've done it with ease. Before that point last week, Leicester had maybe one shot on goal, and today Arsenal were the most beaten of beaten sides. That last 15-20 minutes...we were fucked. We dropped off so much, it was like a complete role reversal, and the opposition spent the rest of the games growing stronger and stronger to the point I was relieved they only equalised so late because we'd have surely lost both games had they gone on any longer than they did. Our poor pre season didnt bother me in terms of results, or even performances. Pre season is just all about fitness. On that note, our pre season looks a fucking abysmal one, I know no team is at their optimum in August, but at the moment, we are looking like a brow beaten side at the end of a very long season. That is very very concerning.

For the majority of today, we were great. Pienaar got injured very early on, a bit of a sickener after such a top performance last week, but in the short term, we got everything right with our changes, as Osman came on, pushing Lukaku out to the wing where he had so much success against Arsenal last season, with Naismith playing through the middle. Not many chances either end, Coleman stupidly presenting Oxlade-Chamberlain with a chance he should have done better with. Made up for it a few minutes later when he gave us the lead, heading in Barry's beautiful far post cross. Mirallas should have made it 2-0 almost immediately, but was too busy diving on the floor looking for a penalty instead of trying to score when one on one. We did get a deserved second though when Lukaku got the better of both Mertesacker and Chambers in his own half before running forward and sliding in Naismith who finished between Szczesny's legs. Naismith looked offside, but having had two equalisers wrongly disallowed in home defeats to Arsenal in recent years, I cant say Im all that sympathetic to Wenger's moaning. Second half wasnt quite so good, but despite Arsenal improving with the introduction of Giroud for the utterly hopeless Alexis Sanchez (who met every stereotype of the fancy dan foreigner who doesnt like the rough stuff) we were still pretty comfortable. But the signs were there, Lukaku had slowed down, and Mirallas had vanished completely (well, other than being offside every time he reappeared...). But then Lukaku went off, and we just could not get the ball away, allowing Arsenal to regain their confidence in possession, coupled with another attacking pair of subs as Wenger was clearly just going for the all or nothing gamble, taking off the awful Wilshere and ineffective Oxlade-Chamberlain for Campbell and Cazorla. And once Jagielka and Distin stood perfectly still and watched a low cross trundle all the way across the penalty area for Ramsey to tap in ahead of Osman and Baines, you just knew what was coming. And Jags and Distin excelled themselves as illustrated above. An absolute sickener of a result that you can accept when you've lost two points through the skill of the opposition. But that really was a case not of two points dropped, but two points absolutely pissed away. As well as we played for much of the game, a hell of a lot more to worry about than be pleased about today.

Everton Man of the Match

James McCarthy. He's a fucking machine. Ive never known a player with so much energy and he's made of kevlar. Great player.

Everton vs Arsenal

Premier League

Goodison Park

Saturday August 23rd 5.30pm

A first home game of the season against the side who finished just above us last season. Tough game, we dont tend to do well against Arsenal, last season's 3-0 hammering was our first win over them since 2007.

Team News

Seamus Coleman is fully fit after coming on as sub last week, while Darron Gibson is also fit to return after long term injury. Only long term injuries Ross Barkley, Arouna Kone and Bryan Oviedo are definitely missing.
Former Blue Mikel Arteta is missing after injuring his ankle midweek against Besiktas. Keiran Gibbs, Serge Gnabry and Theo Walcott are still missing, with Yaya Sanogo is a doubt. Arsenal's World Cup winning German trio Mesut Ozil, Per Mertesacker and Lukas Podolski are available for the first time this season.

Ones to Watch

Matthieu Debuchy. French full back and big money signing from Newcastle replace countryman Bacary Sagna
Aaron Ramsey. Central midfielder who once rose from the dead at Stoke. Found a hell of a scoring touch over the last 2 seasons or so.
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. Tricky winger or attacking midfielder who has come into his own since the injury to Theo Walcott in January, huge miss for England in the World Cup...not that he's so good even he could have saved them!
Alexis Sanchez, this season's Mesut Ozil. Big money signing from Barcelona to give Arsenal hope of challenging for the League again.
Olivier Giroud, 16 goals last season from the striker who is generally still derided no matter what he does because he meets a lazy French stereotype. Put two past us in the Cup last season.

Quite a way to end a long winless run again the Arse! Both chasing 4th place late last season, we'd won 4 games in a row after losing to Arsenal in the FA Cup and were just starting to come into form. Perfect timing as Arsenal were completely blown away. Naismith tapped in a rebound after Szczesny saved from Lukaku early on to put us in control that we never looked like letting go of. Lukaku made sure with a fantastic solo goal just past the half hour to basically finish the game. Just to really rub it in, we had all the fun of having Arteta score an own goal on the hour, then have him et shoved over by Ross Barkley, and booked for moaning about it! Great day all round!

Memorable Meeting

Everton 1-0 Arsenal (Johnson 90) Premier League, March 18th 2007

Our last win over Arsenal prior to last season, but it was a good one! We put in a great performance, Manny Fernandes having by far his best game for the club and running the show in midfield, but we just couldnt make a breakthrough and it looked like we were going to have to settle for a point. Cue a freak hailstorm and an Everton corner in front of the Gwladys in stoppage time. The ball was half cleared to Andy Johnson who didnt hesitate in absolutely cracking the loose ball through the tiniest of gaps between Justin Hoyte and the post to send Goodison absolutely wild. Still one of my favourite ever late winners!

Prediction

Tough game, another draw wouldnt be a bad result, but can see us nicking a win, we're usually good at home. Everton 2-1 Arsenal

Leicester City 2-2 Everton

Leicester City 2-2 Everton

(Ulloa 22, Wood 86: McGeady 20, Naismith 45)

31,603

Hard to really know how to feel after that one. I half expected a draw, so not a bad result really, and we had a few players unfit or missing, so with the players we had available, again not a bad result, the way we played in the second half meant we got pretty much what we deserved...but just so frustrating to be so brilliant in the first half and not get a big enough lead to hold on to.

First half was really good. Dominated possession, killed the atmosphere from the home fans, created chances, we really couldnt have done much more but score more, but then credit to Schmeichel for a couple of good saves. McGeady gave us the lead we deserved with an absolutely beautiful pinpoint finish. A corner was half cleared to Distin, Schmeichel made a brilliant save from his shot, but McGeady picked up the loose ball and found the net off the far post. But then we did what Everton do, and having restricted Leicester to virtually nothing going forward, conceded a cheap corner, Distin fired his clearance right against Ulloa, who volleyed the loose ball home. We nearly retook the lead instantly through Naismith, but the ball was judged to have gone out of play on the build up. McGeady had further chances to retake the lead, a couple of half chances were fluffed, before right on half time, Naismith swept in a low cross off the underside of the bar. Even at that stage I felt we needed a third goal to really see them off, as our defence had looked nervous all day, even under little pressure. We carried on where we left off until about the last 25 minutes, only Leicester had closed the gaps at the back and for all our possession, we never really created anything, and Lukaku was starting to look knackered now, so a big surprise he wasnt subbed. Leicester started to push in the last 15 minutes or so, missing a free hewder, and Schlupp skying a one on one with pretty much his first touch. It was starting to look inevitable, and so it was when we conceded possession in the Leicester half, they broke forward and had players pretty much queueing up to put it away. In the end, it was Chris Wood who did. Too little too late, we pushed for a winner after the goal, but it was too late, Naismith coming closest, having the goal at his mercy only for a defender to put in a last ditch interception and our best chance was gone.

Everton Man of the Match

Steven Pienaar. He can be the most frustrating player we have on a bad day, but on a good day like today, he never stops, is massively creative, and the heart of everything good we do. Probably his best performance for a couple of years.

Leicester City (A)

Leicester City vs Everton

Premier League

King Power Stadium

Saturday August 16th 3pm

At long last, proper footy is back! And we start it with a trip to a ground where we havent played for 10 years! Leicester are back in the Prem after a decade away after winning the Championship last season, and it will be interesting to see how they do. Im never ever a fan of playing promoted sides away early on though, plus the fact we just ALWAYS draw with Leicester, a tough game for us to start with.

Team News

Seamus Coleman is our biggest doubt after injuring his hamstring against Tranmere. He's not far off apparently but I doubt we would be silly enough to risk him. Kevin Mirallas and new signings Christian Atsu and Romelu Lukaku will be assessed, as none of them have played much in pre season after all playing at the World Cup. All are fit, just lacking in match fitness so wouldnt be surprised to see all three start on the bench. A rumour going around that Ross Barkley could be out for 6 weeks, so hopefully at least one or two of those three could make it, or we will have a severe lack of creativity. Bryan Oviedo and Arouna Kone are also unfit after recovering from long term injuries last season.
For Leicester, Anthony Knockaert and Marc Albrighton should be available after knocks picked up in pre season, but Jamie Vardy is likely to be out, while Matt Upson definitely is. Record signing Leonardo Ulloa will likely make his top flight debut up front.

Ones to Watch

Wes Morgan, centre back, captain. First shot at the top flight after so long as a good Championship defender.
Andy King, long serving goalscoring midfielder.
Anthony Knockaert, winger. Unpredictable, but capable of absolute magic. YouTube his goal at Huddersfield.
Marc Albrighton, midfielder. Once highly regarded at Villa before fading away, he gets another chance.
Leo Ulloa. Striker, club record signing from Brighton. Him making the step up will be pretty crucial for Leicester this season.

The Ex Factor

Currently none of either squad is coming up against a former club. The most notable ex players of both clubs have to be Gary Lineker and Tony Cottee, while in more recent seasons, Yakubu and James Vaughan have had loan spells with Leicester from us, while we also sold them Jermaine Beckford.

Last Time

Leicester City 1-1 Everton (Bent 90: Rooney 75) Ferguson sent off 41 Premier League, March 20th 2004
A dark day for the club all over on and off the pitch. It started off in the worst circumstances possible when an Everton fan was killed walking to the ground after being hit by flying debris in freak high winds, so the game was always going to be secondary after that. A relegation six pointer with both of us just outside the drop zone, and us with just on away win all season. It didnt look like improving when Ferguson got sent off for two yellow cards late in the first half...only to then make it worse by throttling Stefan Freund (or better, depending on your opinion of Freund...). But it looked like it was going to be our day after all, when Wayne Rooney hit a low shot into the corner with just 15 minutes left. But no, future Blue Marcus Bent headed in a stoppage time corner to put a crowning turd on a horrible day.

Memorable Meeting

Leicester City 0-1 Everton (Speed (P) 89) Premier League, December 20th 1997

Our last win on Leicester soil, and what a big one it was. We were 19th in the table, and in big trouble just before Christmas. Winless in 8, only 3 goals in that time and no away win in the League all season. But salvation arrived when Kasey Keller brought down Danny Cadamarteri for a late late penalty...Gary Speed stepped up, having missed in a 0-0 draw at Leeds a few weeks earlier...but no mistake this time, and we had  crucial crucial win in a season where we stayed up by the skin of our teeth!

Prediction

We ALWAYS draw at Leicester, always. I can see probably the same again! Leicester City 1-1 Everton

Transfers

Christian Atsu

Chelsea to Everton

Season Long Loan

A loan, hurrah I was beginning to think we were going to disappoint all the whingers and hand wringers last season who got so upset with us doing all our business on loan and only make permanent signings this summer! Another deal that looked dead in the water before suddenly coming back again and happening quickly and painlessly, we have signed the Ghana international winger after he spent last season on loan at Chelsea's feeder club Vitesse Arnhem. Ive only seen him play once, and that was against the USA in the World Cup but if that was anything to go by, we've got another good wide player on our hands, so should give us plenty of options there now to go with Pienaar, McGeady, Mirallas and even Oviedo. He will be available to be in the squad to face Leicester at the weekend.
