Liverpool 1-1 Everton

Liverpool 1-1 Everton

(Gerrard 65: Jagielka 90)

44,511

Here's a sentence I never thought Id type. Phil Jagielka equalised in front of the Kop in stoppage time with a 30 yard volley. Cue a fucking explosion in the Anfield Road End, what a fucking moment.

For the majority of the day, it was a pretty frustrating day where I always felt we should have done better, but in the circumstances, being 1-0 down to a typical fluky Liverpool bastards of a free kick that should never have been given, wiping the smiles off their inbred faces in the manner we did was pretty fucking sweet. Team selection didnt exactly do much for the already dead optimism among Blues fans, Besic getting his first start in a negative midfield, and Hibbert getting his first League start in nearly 2 years at right back. At least it meant Stones and Jagielka played centre half together, and it did make a difference to the last 2 games in that respect, as we were excellent at the back. McCarthy seemed to be doubling up in defence too, just doing the tight marking jobs on the danger men, to the extent Sterling and Markovic were pretty quiet. Looked like we should have had a penalty for a foul on Lukaku early on, havent seen it again yet, but Ill bet everything I have that it would have been given at the other end no questions asked. Liverpool were doing their usual screaming for handball and pens themselves minutes later, and shock fucking horror, the ref actually didnt give them what they wanted for once. Couple of routine saves for both keepers in the first half, we were looking pretty good, until just our luck, Mirallas made a run into the box and pulled his bloody hamstring. Lukaku last year at Anfield, Mirallas this year, classic Everton. McGeady came on, but I dont think we ever had the same kind of threat going forward once Mirallas went off, Lukaku was stuck out on th wing and all the balls were going to him, but then he was having to try and do it all himself because there was nobody else that far forward. The longer it went on, the more it felt like them bastards were going to get their obligatory fluke goal, and so it happened. Balotelli clearly taking out Barry, only to then dive when Baines got near him, and of course, the ref bought it every time that cheating prick dived on the floor and cried for a decision. Typical Everton, typical Gerrard turning up when there is a set piece to be taken when he's been anonymous the rest of the game, and Howard conspires to somehow let it in despite seeming to get a strong hand to it. We had a little panic after the goal, and Balotelli failed to take advantage, hitting the bar from Sterling's cross. We regained our composure though, but still looked short up front despite having so much of the ball. Tyias Browning came on at right back for his debut, and gave us a very good option down the right, and Eto'o finally came on with 10 minutes left, probably too late. Or so we thought, as in the first minute of stoppage time, Liverpool could only half clear, and Jagielka absolutely leathered a perfect curling volley into the top corner. It almost seemed to move in slow motion before it finally hit the net, and what a way to save a point!

Everton Man of the Match

I was torn between three late in the game, John Stones was excellent, James McCarthy superhuman...but I suppose Jagielka has to take it for a near flawless defensive performance, before saving us at the other end. His form since the Arsenal game has deserved it.

Swansea City 3-0 Everton

Swansea City 3-0 Everton

(Dyer 28, Sigurdsson 64, Emnes 87)

Ive given up on this competition. I was right the first time, we will never win the League Cup, because we are far too big and important and successful a club to be bothering ourselves with the likes of this rubbish, so I for one am glad we are out and was actually made up when Swansea got their 3rd.

Yep, thats bullshit isnt it? The only bit thats true was that I as made up when Swansea scored their 3rd as it meant I could finally let go of any lingering childlike optimism we were going to come back and just go home. Missing the traffic was a waste of time though when both the M5 AND M6 had closures resulting in it taking five and a half hours to get home. But then what do Everton care? Ive seen some awful spineless defeats, some of them to much worse sides than Swansea, but last night was truly the first time I actually felt the team were playing to lose. Leeds 2 years ago was pretty bad, but it was more the team selection that told me the manager didnt want to win. This was both. We started the better side, had a couple of half chances, Alcaraz was unlucky not to score with Tremmel coming out to block him at a set piece. But it was Swansea who broke the deadlock, Montero making Hibbert look like crocked hasbeen I think he probably is now, tying him in knots before sending a low cross all the way across the box for Dyer to poke pretty meekly goalwards, and Howard just rolling over it. No worries, we've played alright so far, no reason this is over. Oh no wait, obviously I wasnt privy to teamtalks, but what followed that Swansea game was a team who looked like they had been told that this was a game that didnt matter, give it a go, but if we go behind, dont bother breaking a sweat to try and rescue it. It was one of the worst, going through the motions performance Ive ever seen from an Everton side, it was an all round fucking disrespectful charade of a performance that basically took a flying shit all over the idiots in the away end who went through hell just to get there, only to be served up with that shit.

Sometimes in a perverse kind of way, when we're playing this badly I actually want us to get the twatting we deserve, because you can ignore and talk your way around a terrible performance that can look like an unlucky 1-0 defeat. There can be absolutely no delusions over a 3-0 like that. Or so I thought anyway, at least until I saw Martinez' comments...Distin did a bang up job of making the scoreline more reflective of our performance, trying to clear a pretty awful Shelvey cross by diverting it onto his own bar with a header about an inch off the ground, and with him and Howard flailing around, Sigurdsson strolls in and puts the loose ball into the net, an absolute gift. I suppose we can only be grateful that Swansea clearly had one eye on the weekend so eased off at 2-0, and just treated it as a nice little training exercise. We were obviously treating it the same, bringing on two of the most pointless subs in football history, when any side who actually wanted to get back in this game would have considered the likes of Mirallas and Kone, rather than McCarthy and Osman. Marvin Emnes obviously had to impress though given the chance off the bench and when he fired in a long range third, it finally let me go home.

So its amazing how quickly your mood can change in a week, and the majority of this was totally self inflicted, through shit team selections, players who arent good enough any more, and a general malaise around the team. The only players at the moment who I would say are playing at their absolute best are Mirallas, Coleman and Naismith, none of them played the last two games, Mirallas came on as a late sub on Sunday too late to really change anything. I would include Stones as well, who also didnt play tonight, and was played out of position on Sunday. Nobody else is anywhere near their best, and the only way you get that back is by playing well. The changes on Sunday totally disrupted all the momentum we had picked up in the wins over West Brom and Wolfsburg, and last night just made that worse. Considering Joel always plays domestic cup games, I believe Howard only played to give him a chance to redeem himself and get his confidence back up after those costly mistakes against Palace. Yeah, that worked. Shuffling your squad, letting in 6 more goals and losing back to back games is just the kind of preparation you need for the Derby! Even as bad as Liverpool are playing themselves, they will walk all over us. Everton have a lot of making up to do on Saturday.

Liverpool vs Everton

Premier League

Anfield

Saturday September 27th 12.45pm

Just the kind of prep you want going into the Derby isnt it? Losing twice and letting in 6 goals! Liverpool are in pretty dire form themselves, needing a last minute penalty and penalties to see off a couple of minnows in two cup games, and losing 3 of their 5 League games so far. But of course, we're doing worse...

Team News

Seamus Coleman and Steven Pienaar both have late fitness tests. Im very concerned if Coleman isnt fit. Gibson and Oviedo are fit enough to start games after playing midweek.
Liverpool expect Jordan Henderson and Phillippe Coutinho to be fit, while Daniel Sturridge might be back from injury on the bench. Joe Allen, Emre Can, Jon Flanagan and Glen Johnson are still out.

Ones to Watch

Steven Gerrard, captain of the filthy Kopite bastards.
Simon Mignolet, filthy Kopite bastard and notorious waste of money, so will naturally have his best game in a Liverpool shirt tomorrow.
Dejan Lovren, filthy Kopite bastard and a bloody octopus given where he gets his arms when the Shite are defending set pieces.
Raheem Sterling, filthy diving in form Kopite bastard.
Mario Balotelli, one of the most overrated filthy Kopite bastards ever...so expect him to score his first League goal.

The Ex Factor

There are no players on either side facing their former club today. Judas Barmby, David Johnson, Peter Beardsley and Abel Xavier are among the more well known or notable to play for both clubs.

Liverpool 4-0 Everton (Gerrard 21, Sturridge 33, 35, Suarez 50) Premier League, January 28th 2014

A performance that wouldnt have looked out of place in this season, with us committing a succession of defensive cock ups, and being punished for every one. We were actually playing well, better team maybe even, then committed suicide from a corner to allow Gerrard to score with a free header. It got worse, with Lukaku getting injured trying to defend it, and leaving us with just Steven Naismith to play up front with nobody else. And when Sturridge took advantage of two more within minutes to give them a 3-0 half time lead, it was just a case of hoping it didnt get any more embarassing. It did, Jagielka playing a backpass straight to Suarez, who never misses against us. A little bit of respite despite Sterling feeling the need to dive for a penalty at 4-0 up, but Sturridge fluffed the penalty off target. An abomination of a night.

Memorable Meeting

Liverpool 0-1 Everton (Campbell 4) Westerveld sent off 74, Gerrard sent off 90: Jeffers sent off 74 Premier League, September 27th 1999

Fifteen years ago to the day tomorrow...too fucking long ago since we last won at the Shit Pit. Kevin Campbell gave us an early lead poking in from Jeffers' pass, and that was it. Some comedy late in the game, with Jeffers and Westerveld sent off for a catfight, forcing Liverpool to put Steve Staunton in goal for the last 15 minutes, before Gerrard was sent off in the last minute for a typically scything challenge. One goal was enough though, and its an utter disgrace this is still the last time.

Prediction

Never predict the Derby, but lets just say Im not feeling very good about tomorrow at all, no matter how awful Liverpool are playing.

Everton 2-3 Crystal Palace

Everton 2-3 Crystal Palace

(Lukaku 9, Baines (P) 83: Jedinak (P) 30, Campbell 54, Bolasie 69)

37,574

What an abject fucking suicidal humiliation that was. Palace beat us by the same score last season, but they damn well deserved it and played us off the park. This side couldnt be more far removed, managed by that arch cunt Neil Warnock, whose idea of tactics was to carry on playing for a 0-0 when they were losing 1-0. First 30 minutes were great, took an early lead, and made a couple more chances against a side who never had any intention of even trying to attack. We obviously felt it was a bit dull as things stood so decided to give Palace two goals. Shocking decision making from Howard saw him come flying out of goal and take out James McArthur from absolutely nothing, and suddenly Palace had a penalty and a lifeline they didnt deserve. And then all our fun defensive kamikazee of the first 3 games was in full swing, Coleman's injury meaning Distin had wormed his way back into the side. It was Howard to blame again, as a Palace cross was put into the box second half, and it was the easiest of routine catches for Howard under virtually no pressure Campbell. But some reason only God and Tim Howard know, he got nowhere near it, pretty much bottled out of clattering into Campbell and allowed him a basically unchallenged header into an open goal. Martinez then got in on the kamikazee act, making a couple of crazy subs, not so much bringing on Naismith and Mirallas which was much needed, but taking off Stones and completely screwing up and confusing an already fucked up defence. No surprise we gave them another, Osman dwelling on the ball like we had all the time in the world, and finding an unmarked Bolasie to score Palace's 3rd goal from their 3rd and final shot on target of the game. Fucking shameful.

We had a few chances unsurprisingly, and pulled one back late on through a Baines penalty, but can we seriously expect to win games, even scoring the number of goals we do (that goal kept up our record of scoring at least 2 goals in every game this season) when we defend worse than fucking schoolboys who have never played a game of football in their lives? An absolutely fucking shameful performance, and all the momentum we built from two good performances against West Brom and Wolfsburg are all for shit. We made some very unnecessary changes, never got the shape right with the front 3, which was stupid given we've got a League Cup game on Tuesday, the more ideal game to be making some changes, and have now blown our momentum in the League with Liverpool up next, who are pretty short on momentum themselves. Coleman has already been ruled out of Tuesday night's game, we can only pray he's fit for next week, because I have absolutely zero confidence in that defence when John Stones isnt playing centre half..

Everton Man of the Match

I honestly cant pick one. Everyone was fine in that first half hour, the last hour was embarrassing.

Everton vs Crystal Palace

Premier League

Goodison Park

Saturday September 21st 4pm

A second home game in quick succession against a side who played us off the park here last season. Palace are still winless in the League this season, we need to keep this winning run going with 4 successive away games in 3 competitions coming up next.

Team News

Seamus Coleman is expected to be fit after taking a bang on the head against Wolfsburg, and Sylvain Distin is fit again.
Marouane Chamakh will miss out for Palace, but Joe Ledley and Wilfred Zaha are both expected to play after injuries last week.

Ones to Watch

Julian Speroni, long serving keeper who actually made his Palace home debut against us 10 years ago. Saved Palace with a late penalty save at home to Burnley last week.
Mile Jedinak, captain and Palace's Tim Cahill, an Aussie pest! .
James McArthur, midfielder and former midfield partner of our own James McCarthy at Wigan. Similar in name, similar in style too!
Wilfred Zaha, winger back at Palace on loan after a disastrous year at Man United, and made an impact already with a stoppage time equaliser at Newcastle in their last away game.
Dwight Gayle, striker who has rocketed through the leagues from non league football, culminating in a pair of late goals in that hilarious 3-3 draw with our loveable neighbours!

Everton 2-3 Crystal Palace (Naismith 61, Mirallas 86: Puncheon 23, Dann 49, Jerome 73) Premier League, April 16th 2014

One of the most disappointing results of last season, and easily one of the worst performances. We'd won 7 i a row in the League going into this and it was the crucial game in hand we held over Arsenal after we'd overtook them by beating them at Goodison 10 days earlier. James McCarthy was left on the bench after taking a knock at the weekend, and we discovered that we just cant play our all attack without those 2 holding midfielders. Palace ran rings around us and deservedly led when Jason Puncheon volleyed in half way through the first half. Scott Dann headed in early in the second to give them a cushion. With Palace now dropping deep, we had a lot more of the ball, and Naismith halved the deficit on the hour. But one of the worst defended goals of all time allowed them to restore the 2 goal lead when Jerome scored on the break. Kevin Mirallas made the most of a defensive slip late on to make it 3-2 and give us hope again but it came too late.

Memorable Meeting

Everton 4-0 Crystal Palace (Arteta 7, Cahill 47, 54, Vaughan 87) Premier League, April 10th 2005

A dream start and finish to this game. Mikel Arteta curled in an early free kick to give us a lead we never ever looked like letting up, then blew Palace away in the second half. Tim Cahill scored twice, one of them a brilliant volley after a one two with Steve Watson, before at the time, our youngest ever player (since overtaken by Jose Baxter) James Vaughan slid in to score his first goal for the club 13 minutes after coming as a sub for his senior debut. He became our youngest ever goalscorer, and still holds the record for the youngest ever scorer in the Premier League.

Prediction

Must win. Everton 3-1 Crystal Palace

Thursday 18 September 2014

Everton 4-1 Wolfsburg

Everton 4-1 Wolfsburg

(Rodriguez OG 15, Coleman 45, Baines (P) 47, Mirallas 89:  Rodriguez 90)

Bizarre game footy...how many times have you seen a team win 4-1, and their keeper be man of the match? One of the most flattering scorelines I think Ive ever seen watching the Blues, Wolfsburg were a decent side, we were sloppy, and Howard made some world class saves to keep us in it, especially in the second half. We were already 2-0 up somehow by that point, a good run into the box by Baines set up Naismith who's shot took a triple deflection between Benaglio and Rodriguez before trickling into the corner. Any hope that was going to liven us up after a half mostly characterised by sloppy passing from us any time we looked like starting an attack, didnt really materialise, as Wolfsburg played some good stuff and wasted a few good chances. We went in at half time with 2 though, As Mirallas' shot was beaten away for Baines to help the ball back across goal for Coleman to nod in.

And it was game over just 3 minutes into the second half when McGeady was brought down. Tackle looked to me like it came outside the box, but the ref awarded a penalty, and Baines doesnt miss unless its against Petr Cech! Instead of coasting through to a comfortable win though, Wolfsburg made a couple of attacking subs and kept trying to get back into the game, Stones and Howard outstanding in keeping them out. Howard's one handed save from Rodriguez' free kick being by far the pick. Eto'o came on for Lukaku with 20 to play and we did at last liven up a bit and threaten to score a couple more, before we got a 4th when Eto'o sent Mirallas racing clear for an easy finish. And just when we thought that was it, Wolfsburg did score! Rodriguez with his 3rd attempt of the night from a free kick into the top corner.

So knowing our luck now, we batter Palace on Sunday and lose 1-0! A good night all round really despite a sloppy performance. A good boost to the goal difference on top of the win, and with Lille and Krasnodar drawing in France in the other game, we now have a little daylight and a little less pressure on the Krasnodar game in 2 weeks.

Everton Man of the Match

Tim Howard. Outstanding, gets better with age. Kept us in it at times tonight and made a game that could have been very tricky as comfortable as the scoreline made it look.

Wolfsburg (H)

Everton vs Wolfsburg

Europa League Group Stage

Goodison Park

Thursday September 18th 8.05pm

So Europe is back at Goodison after four years. And given the price of the tickets and the greater excitement over the two big away trips, it is quite underwhelming. Still, a good test first up against Germans Wolfsburg, 5th place in England vs 5th place in Germany so we should be quite evenly matched. Wolfsburg will be the 4th German side we have played in our history, and we have never previously lost. We have beaten FC Nurnberg twice, once over 2 legs in the 60s, and in the group stage 7 years ago, won the first ever European penalty shootout against Moenchengladbach in 1970, and famously beat Bayern Munich on our way to the Cup Winners Cup in 1985.

Team News

Samuel Eto'o and Sylvain Distin are fit after missing West Brom at the weekend. To be honest, the team could be anything, but if it were my choice, I wouldnt make too many changes, and certainly not in the defence after getting our first clean sheet on Saturday. Maybe just give Barry and Lukaku a break, and maybe give Atsu a run out.

Luis Gustavo, former Bayern Munich destroyer and Brazil international. Likely to miss out tonight.

Kevin De Bruyne, ex Chelsea creative midfielder who starred for Belgium in the World Cup.
Ivica Olic, Croatian former Bayern striker, bloody good player and a ton of experience.
Nicklas Bendtner. The sucker punch, ex Arsenal laughing stock who will most likely make the whole world eat their words tonight just to wind us up.

FC Nurnberg 0-2 Everton (Arteta (P) 83, Anichebe 87) UEFA Cup Group Stage, November 8th 2007

Our last game against German opposition coincided with my first European away. And what a night it was. Thousands of Blues taking over Nurnberg, and coming away with a memorable late win. One of those games where we played well but just couldnt score, before sub Victor Anichebe had probably his most productive five minutes in an Everton shirt. His presence forced a defender to wrestle him to the ground in the area, and Mikel Arteta put away the penalty in front of a delerious away end. Anichebe then finished it off just minutes later, using his strength to turn a defender before sliding in from a near impossible angle.

Memorable Meeting

Everton 3-1 Bayern Munich (Sharp 48, Gray 75, Steven 85: Hoeness 37) European Cup Winners Cup Semi Final 2nd Leg, April 24th 1985

Arguably one of the best nights in our history, and never forgotten by those lucky enough to be there. We'd drawn 0-0 in the Olympic Stadium in the first leg, so the game was on a knife edge. And it looked very very bad when Dieter Hoeness scored a crucial away goal to give Bayern the lead just before half time. Manager Howard Kendall famously told the team at half time to just get the ball forward and the Gwladys would suck the goals in...he couldnt have been more right. Just 3 minutes into the second half, Andy Gray flicked on from a throw in and Graeme Sharp glanced a header into the bottom corner. Bayern werent just rattled now, but shattered, but we still needed to score again. And with 15 minutes to go, another near post throw in was misjudged by Pfaff in the Bayern goal, leaving Andy Gray the easiest of tap ins into the open net. Trevor Steven put the icing on a very tasty cake with a memorable late breakaway goal to send us to our first ever European Final against Rapid Vienna in Rotterdam.

Prediction

Need to get off to a good start, and in particular with being at home. Provided we put out a good side, got to be looking for a win. Everton 3-1 Wolfsburg

Saturday 13 September 2014

West Bromwich Albion 0-2 Everton

West Bromwich Albion 0-2 Everton

(Lukaku 2, Mirallas 66)

23,567

Finally a first win and clean sheet of the season, and to be honest, it was fairly routine. Got off to a perfect start when Lukaku scored his first goal since signing permanently, and unsurprisingly against his former club. Jonas Olsson's clearance went straight to Lukaku, who took a touch and curled it into the top corner. The rest of the first half was a bit bitty really, both sides had one or two half chances, but it was mainly a midfield rumble, with us mostly dominating possession, but not really threatening enough with it, long range shots from Lukaku and Mirallas the closest we came. Second half was much brighter, were a bit more clinical with our possession, made a few chances and Foster had to make a few saves, McGeady having a good shot, while Naismith should have scored with the goal gaping after Foster parried a shot from Lukaku. Foster had to take the blame for the second goal though, allowing a pretty routine shot from Mirallas to squirm under him to give us the cushion we always needed given the way we've defended this season. Stones made a huge difference at the back though, as we looked much more secure all day, even Jagielka who has been so poor this season had a good game today, including one pretty much goal saving challenge in the second half. Osman came on for Lukaku once we had our lead extended, and to be honest, we got better. Osman was unlucky not to to score twice, first having a drilled shot saved after a brilliant move, and one that deflected up and over that Foster did well to tip over. Tim Howard played his part too to keep the clean sheet with a great double save at the death.

Great win, big one for our confidence all round, with Lukaku getting off the mark and stopping the rot defensively too. Europe next with Wolfsburg at Goodison on Thursday night.

Everton Man of the Match

Gareth Barry was outstanding. Dominated the midfield when the game was a bit rough first half, but was starting a lot of our attacks as well. At his best today.

West Bromwich Albion (A)

West Bromwich Albion vs Everton

Premier League

The Hawthorns

Saturday September 13th 3pm

For once we've had an international break where we havent been weakened by injuries! Lukaku didnt play for Belgium to work on his fitness, Stones, Jagielka and Baines played their part in 2 clean sheets for England, Christian Atsu scored a winning goal for Ghana, and Aiden McGeady scored both for Ireland in a win in Georgia. The transfer window ended fairly disappointingly, though it could have been worse, we nearly signed Tom Cleverley! Remains to be seen if our squad is big enough to see us through to Christmas.

Team News

Romelu Lukaku is expected to be fit to face his former club after skipping internationals for treatment on a toe injury. Samuel Eto'o and Leon Osman are doubtful. Arouna Kone and Bryan Oviedo both played a behind closed doors game this week but are still a way short of match fitness.

Craig Gardner, midfield. Bargain signing from Sunderland, one of those players who is pretty steady and versatile, while always having a knack for popping up with a goal.
Youssef Mulumbu, midfield. Pretty underrated player who has a bit of a thing for scoring against us!
Ideye Brown, striker. Club record signing who hasnt scored yet...how many times have I heard that over the years?

Last Time

West Bromwich Albion 1-1 Everton (Lugano 75: Mirallas 41) Premier League, January 20th 2014

One of last season's more frustrating away games. Mainly because we were so utterly comfortable in the first half and just fell away and let West Brom grow to the extent that we were almost hanging on for a point at the end. Mirallas gave us a deserved lead just before half time, while West Brom offered absolutely nothing, so we were all ready for a good second half and seeing it out with maybe another goal or two. Couldnt have been more different. West Brom were still poor but we almost stopped playing, and it allowed West Brom to gain their confidence. By the time Diego Lugano headed in a late-ish equaliser, it had been coming. We had a last minute winner disallowed for offside just to frustrate even futher.

Memorable Meeting

West Bromwich Albion 0-1 Everton (Anichebe 87) Premier League, January 1st 2012

For 87 minutes, this one of the worst games Ive ever been to! New Years Day, early kick off, and two utterly dreadful teams playing out a shocking game of football, that onl promised to get worse when we threw on Victor Anichebe and Denis Stracqualursi in search of a winner! But it somehow paid off, Stracqualursi's presence caused a mistake in the Baggies defence, and Anichebe scuffed in a scruffy late winner that was celebrated like a World Cup winner!

Prediction

We dont do good at West Brom usually. They've had a poor start to the season themselves, so as long as we've sorted out our defensive problems, got to be looking for a first win. West Bromwich Albion 0-2 Everton
